YEOVIL
Jack The Treacle Eater; one of the BARWICK PARK FOLLIES
ST 559 129; 555 143; 563 142; 561 148 C18/C19

Before he founded fotoLibra, Gwyn Headley was best known as Britain’s leading folly expert. With Dutch art historian Wim Meulenkamp he wrote three books on British follies, co-founded the registered charity The Folly Fellowship, and he edited Follies Magazine.

Headley & Meulenkamp’s last book, Follies Grottoes & Garden Buildings, was published by Aurum Press in 1999. As it’s no longer available in print, an ebook version is planned.

About 20% of the follies written about in FG&GB were illustrated, all in black and white. Headley & Meulenkamp would ideally like to see every folly -- over 1,600 in Britain -- illustrated in colour or with historic images in the new ebook.

There will be a series of Picture Calls over the next couple of weeks listing all the follies mentioned in Follies Grottoes & Garden Buildings. In the north reasonably accurate OS grid references will be given; in the south these are only accurate to within a mile. A date is given for most buildings; “C18” means “Eighteenth Century”.

There will be around four counties per Picture Call in England. We start in the south-west: CORNWALL; DEVON; SOMERSET; DORSET.

This is an open-ended call. We’ve set an arbitrary deadline of May 31 2011, though this may well be extended.

If you need further assistance in locating the buildings such as a description of them, please email gwyn.headley@heritage.co.uk with a list of up to six of these follies you would like to photograph, and he will do his best to help by sending you the relevant texts from the book.

Feel free to add anything you believe to be a folly which is not on these lists, and please add a detailed Description of it in your metadata.

fotoLibra already has more photographs of follies than any other picture library. Please help add to this notable collection.
