Description
The Panther Chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) is a species of chameleon. It lives in the eastern and northern parts of Madagascar[1] in a tropical forest biome. Additionally, it has been introduced to Réunion and Mauritius. Male Panther Chameleons can grow up to 20 inches (50 cm) in length, with a typical length of around 17 inches (45 cm). Females are smaller, at about half the size. In a form of sexual dimorphism male Panther Chameleons are more vibrantly colored than the females. Coloration varies with location, and the different color patterns of Panther Chameleons are commonly referred to as 'locales', which are named after the geographical location in which they are found. Panther Chameleons from the areas of Nosy Be, Ankify and Ambanja are typically a vibrant blue, while those from Antsiranana and Sambava are red, green or orange. The areas of Maroantsetra and Tamatave yield primarily red specimens. There are numerous other color phases, and patterns differ between and within regions. Female Panther Chameleons generally remain tan and brown with hints of pink peach or bright orange, no matter what region they are from, but there are slight differences in patterns and colors among the diIt is a common misconception that chameleons of any kind can change colour to match any colour they are up against. All chameleons have a natural colour range with which they are born and is dictated by their species. Colour change is, for the most part, subconscious. It is affected by temperature, moo

Jersey, St.Helier, Elisabeth castle, parade ground, military biuldings, barracks, tall chimeny stacks, Harbour
Description
The tidal island called L'Islet lying in St. Aubin's Bay became the site of the Abbey (later Priory) of Saint Helier. The monastic buildings were finally taken over by the Crown at the Reformation. Surviving buildings were used for military purposes. Construction of the castle began in 1594, and continued in the first years of the 17th century under the then governor of Jersey, Sir Walter Raleigh, who named it "Fort Isabella Bellissima" (the most beautiful Elizabeth) after Queen Elizabeth the First. Governors of Jersey moved their official residence from Mont Orgueil to Elizabeth Castle. Elizabeth Castle was first used in a military context during the English Civil War in the 17th century. Charles II visited the castle in 1646 and 1649, staying in the Governor's House, and was proclaimed King by governor Sir George Carteret despite the abolition of the monarchy in England. In 1651, Parliamentary forces landed in Jersey and bombarded the castle with mortars. The destruction of the mediaeval Abbey church in the heart of the castle complex which had been used as the storehouse for ammunition and provisions forced Carteret to surrender, and Jersey was held by Parliamentarians for nine years. The current parade ground and surrounding buildings were constructed on the site of the destroyed Abbey church. During the Seven Years War, French prisoners were kept at the island. Perhaps the most well known was Jean-Louis Le Loutre. The castle was next involved in conflict in the late 18th century, th
Liberation Sculpture, bronze sculpture, liberation Square, Jersey, marble island, St.Helier, water moat, bronze figures
Description
Known as the Liberation Sculpture, this very fine monument to freedom caused huge controversy in the island. The original design of the sculptor, Philip Jackson FRSS – seven islanders waving a UK flag - was altered by the Occupation and Liberation Committee of the States of Jersey to show a group of doves being released as a symbol of peace. This drew the cynical observation that far from releasing the doves, islanders suffering wartime deprivations would have had them for dinner When unveiled by the Prince of Wales on 9 May 1995, the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of the Channel Islands, the sculpture had had its flag reinstated, and one of figures had become a British soldier. But are the Islanders joyously unfurling the flag, or clinging onto it, or throwing it away?

Bear, andean bear, bear sitting on fallen tree, spectacled bear, black bear, animal, captive bear, Darrel Zoo, Jersey
Description
The spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), also known as the Andean bear and locally as ukuko, jukumari or ucumari, is the last remaining short-faced bear (subfamily Tremarctinae) and the closest living relative to the Florida spectacled bear[2] and short-faced bears of the Middle Pleistocene to Late Pleistocene age.[3][4] The spectacled bear is a relatively small species of bear native to South America, where it is second only to the 3 tapir species as the largest extant land mammal. It has black fur with a distinctive beige-coloured marking across its face and upper chest, though not all Andean bears have "spectacle" markings. Males are a third larger than females in dimensions and sometimes twice their weight.[5] Males can weigh 100 – 200 kilograms (220 – 440 lb), and females 35 –82 kilograms (77 – 181 lb).[6] Length can range from 120 to 200 cm (47–79 in) long and shoulder height from 60 to 90 cm (24–30 in).[7][8][9] They are found in several areas of northern and western South America, including eastern Panama,[10] western Venezuela,[11] Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, western Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina. Spectacled bears are the only surviving species of bear native to South America, and the only surviving member of the subfamily Tremarctinae. Their survival has depended mostly on their ability to climb even the tallest trees of the Andes.

WW1 Shells, brass shells, decorated shells, battle of the Somme shells, Nov. 1916 shells, magdeburge
Description
The brass shells are a reminder of one of the worst military conflicts of WW1. Each shell has been decorated with what seems to be a dove in a pear tree with a crest named ALBERT on one shell and BAPAUME on the other. indicating the battle of the Somme, with the main straight road leading from Albert to Bapaume. The Albert-Bapaume Road featured strongly in the plans for the Somme attack of 1st July, because it was to become the main supply artery which would have enabled the various support arms and units to keep up with the advance. This was not to be, of course, and the straight road from Albert to Bapaume was to become a symbol not of a floodgate thrown open towards Victory, but of a shutting-down, a closing-in, a vicious bottleneck.
