Bridges Architecture PLEASE NOTE - THE TEXT BELOW IS NOT MINE BUT FROM THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE. IT IS FOR DESCRIPTION ONLY. THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN FROM VIEWING GALLERY OF THE SHELL BUILDING ON THE Thames, London.; ; The new Hungerford Bridge was carried out as a Millennium Project. The original lighting design was executed between 1997-1999. The project suffered from delays due to funding and as a result the bridge was not constructed, opened and the lighting turned on until 2002. ; ; The scheme which consists of two new suspension footbridges hung off either side of an existing rail bridge uses a daring structure that echoes Brunel's original suspension bridge on the site.; ; The lighting concept aimed to achieve two main goals - to provide safe passage across the Thames after dark whilst maintaining views and to provide an appropriate expression to the structure creating a new landmark after dark.; ; The lighting was to achieve this is a manner that controlled energy use and limited light pollution.; ; The lighting was designed to be simple with only three main functions, 1. Low level local lighting to the bridge deck. 2. High level lighting to the cable stays and deck. 3. Architectural lighting to the pylons.; ; It was decided not to illuminate the soffit of the bridge in the interests of ease of maintenance and to limit energy use.; ; The low level lighting to the deck is provided by the use of high output cold cathode set within a proprietary balustrade detail. 'Free light' is captured off the back of the lamps through a blue lens provides a series of blue 'wands'. This detail requires low maintenance due to the long lamp life of the source.; ; The high level lighting is provided using medium beam spotlights, these are concealed within the structural nodes and provide light to the cable stays and deck. The pylon lighting is provided by narrow angle spotlights. The fixtures are fixed to specially designed outriggers fitted to the main structure. The pylons are capped with beacons fitted with blue LED's providing an accent light that can be seen from a distance. The uplights to the pylon are the only upward orientated fixtures on the scheme.; ; Other elements include the lighting of the lift cars, the staircases (supplemented by local street lighting) and Brunel's original brick piers which are illuminated with asymmetric floodlights fixed to the deck.
