Temple Bar in Theobalds Park - 1940 Temple Bar was originally built as a boundary and gateway to the City of London after the Great Fire of London destroyed it predecessor. Its design is attributed to Christopher Wren and it was constructed between 1669 and 1672. After being dismantled during road widening it was moved piece by piece to Theobalds Park in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire were in 1888 it became a gatehouse and folly for Sir Henry Meux’s home at the request of his wife. Sitting in overgrown woodland for many years it was again dismantled, removed and restored finding a home on the Paternoster Square redevelopment (north of Wren’s St Paul’s Cathedral) back in the City of London in 2004. Temple Bar is photographed here in 1940 while still in use as a drive and before the gatehouse was fenced off to the public. It is also before the years of vandalism as the picture shows most of the original features still intact such as the statues and stain glass window in the upper chamber.
