Description
Tug of war is a traditional English team game where two teams of men grasp each end of a heavy rope. The centre of the rope, usually marked with a coloured cloth, starts over a centre line on the grass. To each side of this centre line another line is drawn. When the umpire signals the start of the pull, each side tries to pull the other over the nearest line to the front man. There are usually village teams and there is much serious, if good-hearted rivalry at the competitions which are usually held at the annual fete in English villages.

There are only 20-30 breeding males in UK. Most of the breeding pairs in UK can be found in summer, on the remote island of Fetlar in the Shetland islands off the North East coast of Scotland. They come to the small Lock of Funzie, where this photograph was taken, to breed in Summer and are surprisingly tame. They are very willing to show themselves and come close to visitors either at the water's edge or on the grass that edges the loch. The duller coloured male looks after the eggs and young after laying. As a rare UK breeding species it is a Red List bird.
