The Ptarmigan is a member of the grouse family and can be found among the snow and rocks at the highest points of Glenshee and Cairngorm. These rare birds are coming under increasing pressure due to climate change and may soon be a distant memory in the UK. Like the Mountain Hare, they rely on pure white plumage to protect them from being easy targets to predators in the winter months and with the snow line retreating higher each year, so the birds range contracts. Meaning a longer walk for the Bird watchers who want to see them!
