Wind Cave National Park protects a diverse ecosystem with Eastern and western plant and animal species. Some of the more visible animals include elk (also called wapiti), bison, pronghorn antelope and prairie dogs. The Wind Cave bison herd is one of only four free-roaming and genetically pure herds on public lands in North America. The other three herds are in Yellowstone National Park, the Henry Mountains in Utah and on Elk Island in Alberta, Canada. The Giant Anteater Resides in grassland Savannah, deciduous woodlands and rain forests from the Southern tip of Mexico to Uruguay and North Western Argentina. is made up of ants and termites. An individual may eat up to 30, 000 ants in a day! They are the largest of the living anteaters and are mostly blind, but have a very keen sense of smell. The upper and lower jaws are fused, forming a boney tube that houses a long sticky tongue.The front feet have huge claws which are used to break open termite mounds.The Giant Anteater has the lowest body temperature of any terrestrial mammal (reaching as low as 32 degrees c).They can sleep for up to 16 hours a day with their tails wrapped round them like a blanket.
