Hadrian's Wall; Northumberland; winter, Pennines, Tyne Valley, mist, temperature inversion, sunset
Description
A winter sunset viewed near Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. The location is a few feet below the line of the roman wall at this point on Peel Crags which is a steep rock outcrop that carries the Roman Wall and the Hadrian's Wall long distance footpath over the Whin Sill above Steel Rigg about two miles west of Housesteads. The sun is setting over the northern Pennines, in the middle distance the south Tyne valley is mist covered due to a temperature inversion.
The most popular stop along the Trans-Siberian Railway is at Lake Baikal - one of the world's largest, deepest and cleanest lakes. 600 km long and 80 km wide, It is so huge that it contains 20% of the world's fresh water supply. Sturgeon, salmon and the local speciality, omul, are producst of the lake. The train passes by the lake at an unspectacular angle, but most Trans-Siberian and Trans-Mongolian passengers alight at Irkutsk Station and head for the a couple days on the lake. Hiking, fishing, boat excursions and homestays with Russian and Buryat families are popular pastimes with travelers.
