Lipari The largest of the Aeolian islands, Lipari a sizeable town, . Although the town has its attractions (the fortified acropolis, some flower-hung alleys, the pretty harbour of Marina Corta), it's not a very sophisticated place. The coast around here is wild, rocky and, best of all, undeveloped, with splintered rocks offshore and extraordinary views. Description
Hiorne Tower, a triangular prospect tower, was built in 1787 by Francis Hiorne. It offers a marvellous view across the South Downs, and is said to be haunted. Erected in front of the tower is this ancient urn, which was brought back as spoils from the Crimean War after the siege of Sevastapol in 1855.
