Medal commemorating the discovery of vaccination in 1796. Edward Jenner (1749-1823) practiced as a country doctor in his native Gloucestershire. He noted the immunity to smallpox given by cow-pox. In 1796 he vaccinated James Phipps a number of times with pus from cow-pox pustules on a dairy maid. He then inoculated him with smallpox. The boy was ill for a few days, then recovered. Claude Bernard, French physiologist. From the obverse of a commemorative medal. Bernard (1813-1878) investigated the liver, discovering glycogen, and determined that most of the process of digestion occurs in the small intestine, rather that the stomach. He showed that haemoglobin carries oxygen in red blood cells, and demonstated how carbon monoxide poisoning disrupted this process. When Bernard died in 1878, the French government organised his funeral, making him the first French scientist to be honoured in this way.

Known to Dumagueteños as Dumaguete Cathedral, the St. Catherine of Alexandria Church is one of the solid structural witnesses of Dumaguete’s rich history and culture. The Cathedral boasts that it is the “Oldest Stone Church in Negros”. The church was originally built in 1754 to 1776. It was reconstructed in 1885 and the present facade was extended in 1936. This is the main Roman Catholic Church in the region and it is the seat of the Diocese of Dumaguete.

Description
To commemorate Queen Victoria's 1897 Diamond Jubilee, a Jubilee Clock Tower was constructed in George Town, Penang at the time a British Straits Settlement in the same year at junction of Light Street and Pantai Street. Built in a Moorish style the tower is sixty feet tall, one foot for each year of Victoria's reign.
