Lion Walk, Colchester, Essex is now part of the Lion Walk shopping precinct. The street is still dominated by the Spire of the United Reformed Chuch which was completely rebuilt around the seventeenth century spire when the new shopping was built on the 1980s (completed in 1986).
Believed to be the former Railway Mission, in Saffron Walden, Essex. This building is in Gold Street, which is in line with Station Street, though not now connected. The laundry was founded in 1897 and has been in the same premises since the early 1900s. These two facts make this the most likely building to have originally been the Railway Mission. The castellated facade of the original building could well have been replaced by the single brick wall now holding the company's name board, which is clearly not a structural feature. There is no other laundry in the town. There is no mention of the Railway Mission either in the town library, which is well stocked with local books, or online. This building backs on to Elm Grove, once the location of a folly which was being regularly vandalised before being demolished. Elm Grove is now part supermarket car park and part sheltered housing.
Part of the Culver Square Shopping Precinct, Colchester, Essex, this part leads toward Culver Street West in the centre of the picture. The larger red brick building on the right is the former public libary, which was incorporated into the new precinct and is now occupied by Waterstones. The square was completed in 1987.
Connaught Avenue, Frinton on Sea, Essex, was known in the 1930s at 'The Bond Street of East Anglia'. Much of it remains unchanged, if somewhat delapidated from its former glory. The snob value of Frinton used to be the part 'inside the gates' which were the manually operated level crossing gates at the top end of Connaught Avenue. The opposition to removing the gates and replacing them with remotely operated barriers was so great that Network Rail did the changeover during the night and unannounced.
