NAVAL ENGAGEMENT - WAR of 1812 : the large and powerful U.S. frigate 'Constitution' , Capt.Hull, fell in with the small British frigate 'Guerriere' , Capt Dacres, which was bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia for a refit. In the hard-fought duel that followed the British ship was soundly beaten and burnt to the waterline. The NAVAL BATTLE of WHAMPOA REACH, 1840, during the First Opium War. A small British naval detachment under Capt. Sir H. Flemming Stenhouse attempting to sail upriver to Canton was ambushed in Whampoa Reach by more than 40 Chinese war junks. In the ensuring engagement all the junks were destroyed.
