Description
Vintage lithograph print depicting the Battle of Hampton Roads, often known as the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack (or Merrimac), during the American Civil War. The battle, the most famous naval engagement of the war, was fought on March 8 + 9 1862 off Sewell's Point at Hampton Roads, Virginia, where the Elizabeth + Nansemond Rivers meet the James River just before it enters Chesapeake Bay. It was part of a Confederate bid to break a Union blockade which had cut off Virginia's largest cities Norfolk and Richmond from international trade. The engagement was significant because it was the world's first meeting in combat of two ironclad warships - the Confederate CSS Virginia (in reality the salvaged federal frigate USS Merrimack which had been fitted with iron armour and renamed the Virginia) and the smaller Union USS Monitor. On March 8 the Virginia destroyed two conventional wooden Union ships and a third, the USS Minnesota, ran aground. The next day the Virginia (left of picture) returned to finish off the Minnesota but was met by the Monitor (right of picture) which had arrived overnight and took position to defend the Minnesota. The ironclads fought for around three hours but neither inflicted fatal damage and there was no clear winner. The battle won worldwide publicity and marked a new era in naval warfare - leading naval powers Britain and France halted construction of wooden-hulled ships and others soon followed. Print circa 1886 by L Prang & Co.

Description
Vintage painting depicting English Antarctic explorer Captain Lawrence "Titus" Oates (1880 - 1912) walking into a blizzard and sacrificing his life during Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition of 1910 - 1913. Oates, Scott, Dr Edward Wilson, Lieutenant Henry Robertson "Birdie" Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans reached the geographic South Pole in January 1912 but found that Norwegian Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by just over a month. Oates famously sacrificed his life in a bid to save his comrades as they returned from the Pole - knowing that his ill-health was slowing down the others he walked out of their tent and into a blizzard on March 16 after uttering the words "I am just going outside and may be some time". His suicide proved to be in vain - Scott and the others all perished before reaching safety. The 1913 painting is entitled "A Very Gallant Gentleman" and is by English artist John Charles Dollman (1851 - 1934).

Description
Vintage engraving print of Lady Godiva preparing to ride naked on a horse through the streets of Coventry in England. Legend has it that Godiva, an 11th century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman, made the ride after her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia, promised to ease oppressive taxes on local people if she did so. Only her long hair is said to have protected her modesty. The story began circulating a century after Godiva's death and later versions include claims that she instructed townspeople to stay indoors with windows closed as she rode by. One man named Tom was then allegedly struck blind for peeking out of his window - giving rise to the expression "Peeping Tom". Historians agree that Leofric and Godiva existed but it is not known if the naked horse ride ever actually took place. The engraving, circa 1874 by Thomas Lewis Atkinson from a painting by Jan Van Lerius, shows Lady Godiva momentarily covering herself with a curtain as she slips out of her home and heads towards a white horse which can be seen standing outside.

Description
Vintage engraving print depicting the trial of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, in Westminster Hall in 1641. Wentworth (1593 - 1641) was an English statesman and a major figure in the period leading up to the English Civil War. He served in Parliament, became a supporter of King Charles I and from 1632 - 1639 imposed a harsh rule as Lord Deputy of Ireland. He was recalled to England in late 1639 and became a leading advisor to the King, attempting to strengthen the royal position against Parliament. He was impeached by Parliament for "high misdemeanours" and his trial opened on March 22 1641 but defended himself so ably that his opponents had a bill of attainder passed in April / May condemning him to death - essentially a mechanism which allows Parliament to decree that an accused person is guilty of treason without actually proving it in law. The king reluctantly signed his death warrant and Wentworth was beheaded on Tower Hill on May 12 1641. Engraving circa 1842 by James Scott, based on a painting by William Fisk.

Description
Colour print circa 1888 depicting the Siege of Vicksburg during the US Civil War. The siege, from May 25 - July 4 1863, occurred after Union Major General Ulysses S Grant and his Army of the Tennessee crossed the Mississippi River and drove Confederate forces under Lieutenant General John C Pemberton into the defensive lines surrounding the fortress city of Vicksburg. Two initial Union assaults were repulsed and Grant then besieged the garrison for more than 40 days before it finally surrendered. The Confederate surrender, when combined with General Robert E Lee's defeat at Gettysburg the previous day, is sometimes seen as the turning point of the war. Print by L Prang & Co.

On March 8 the Virginia destroyed two conventional wooden Union ships and a third, the USS Minnesota, ran aground (burning offshore in the print to the left of the fighting ironclads). The next day the Virginia returned to finish off the Minnesota but was met by the Monitor which had arrived overnight and took position to defend the Minnesota. The ironclads fought for around three hours but neither inflicted fatal damage and there was no clear winner. The battle won worldwide publicity and marked a new era in naval warfare - leading naval powers Britain and France halted construction of wooden-hulled ships and others soon followed. Print c1889 by Kurz & Allison.
