Strasbourg Cathedral or the Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg (French: Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Strasbourg, German: Liebfrauenmünster zu Straßburg) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Strasbourg, France. Although considerable parts of it are still in Romanesque Architecture, it is widely considered to be among the finest examples of high, or late, Gothic Architecture. Erwin von Steinbach is credited for major contributions from 1277 to his death in 1318. At 142 metres, it was the world's tallest building from 1647 to 1874, when it was surpassed by St. Nikolai's Church, Hamburg. Today it is the sixth-tallest church in the world. Described by Victor Hugo as a "gigantic and delicate marvel",[1] the cathedral is visible far across the plains of Alsace and can be seen from as far off as the Vosges Mountains or the Black Forest on the other side of the Rhine. Sandstone from the Vosges used in construction gives the cathedral its characteristic pink hue. The Leicester Seamstress The Leicester Seamstress outside the City Rooms on Hotel Street, by James Walter Butler RA, represents a life-size seated eighteenth century hosiery worker sewing the seam of a stocking. The statue was commissioned by Leicester City Council's Planning Committee, along with Kevin Atherton's Conversation Piece, as part of the Council's City Centre Action Programme. It was unveiled on 29 June 1990 by the then chair of the council's Planning Committee. In 2007, as part of a major refurbishment of the pedestrianised section of Hotel Street, the statue of the seamstress was reinstalled on a new granite plinth, with new lighting to illuminate her face at night.

Town Hall Square Fountain On 29 October 1878, Leicester Town Council gratefully accepted on behalf of the Borough the offer from Israel Hart, a former Mayor of Leicester, of "a handsome ornamental fountain to be placed in the centre of the land fronting the Town Hall Buildings". The fountain, together with the layout of Town Hall Square, was designed by Francis Hames, the architect of the Town Hall, and the fountain was unveiled by Sir Israel Hart on 24 September 1879. It is constructed of bronze-painted cast iron, Shap granite and Ross of Mull granite.

Wallabies were released from a nearby private zoo into the Roaches, Staffordshire, before the war, and survived in the wild around the Roaches and the Dane Valley. This photograph (along with three others) were taken by myself during the winter of 1962 - 63. I had thought that the wallabies had since died out, but they still survive in the area, though sightings are quite rare.

Gutenberg Strasbourg printing history

Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg (c. 1398 – February 3, 1468) was a German goldsmith and printer who introduced modern book printing. His invention of mechanical movable type printing started the Printing Revolution and is widely regarded as the most important event of the modern period.[1] It played a key role in the development of the Renaissance, Reformation and the Scientific Revolution and laid the material basis for the modern knowledge-based economy and the spread of learning to the masses.[2] Gutenberg was the first European to use movable type printing, in around 1439, and the global inventor of the printing press. Among his many contributions to printing are: the invention of a process for mass-producing movable type; the use of oil-based ink; and the use of a wooden printing press similar to the agricultural screw presses of the period. His truly epochal invention was the combination of these elements into a practical system which allowed the mass production of printed books and was economically viable for printers and readers alike. Gutenberg's method for making type is traditionally considered to have included a type metal alloy and a hand mould for casting type. The use of movable type was a marked improvement on the handwritten manuscript, which was the existing method of book production in Europe, and upon woodblock printing, and revolutionized European book-making. The European Parliament represents, in the words of the 1957 Treaty of Rome, 'the peoples of the States brought together in the European Community'. Some 375 million European citizens in 15 countries are now involved in the process of European integration through their 626 representatives in the European Parliament. The European Parliament, Strasbourg The first direct elections to the European Parliament were held in June 1979 when, 34 years after the end of Second World War, for the first time in history, the peoples of the nations of Europe, once torn apart by war, went to the polls to elect the members of a single parliament. Europeans could have devised no more powerful symbol of reconciliation. The European Parliament, which derives its legitimacy from direct universal suffrage and is elected every five years, has steadily acquired greater influence and power through a series of treaties. These treaties, particularly the 1992 Maastricht Treaty and the 1997 Amsterdam Treaty, have transformed the European Parliament from a purely consultative assembly into a legislative parliament, exercising powers similar to those of the national parliaments.
