Description
A centrepiece on Plymouth's Hoe, Smeaton's Tower has become one of the South West's most well known landmarks. The lighthouse was originally built on the Eddystone reef in 1759 at a cost of £40,000, but was taken down in the early 1880s when it was discovered that the sea was undermining the rock it was standing on. Approximately two thirds of the structure was moved stone by stone to its current resting place on the Hoe. Now standing at 72 foot high, Smeaton's Tower offers fantastic views of Plymouth Sound and the city from its lantern room which, along with the rest of the building, has been painstakingly restored to its original glory.
Smeaton's Tower is situated on Plymouth Hoe, overlooking Plymouth Sound. It was originally a lighthouse erected on the Eddystone reef in 1759, but had to be removed due to erosion of the rock by the sea. It was moved to Plymouth after a public subscription and opened in 1884 as a memorial to John Smeaton who had built the lighthouse.
Smeaton's Tower, the third Eddystone lighthouse design was rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe after the rocks it was built on were found to be undermined by the sea.

Drake Circus Shopping Centre is a 60,800 m² (654,000 ft²) covered shopping mall in the centre of Plymouth, England which opened in October 2006. The new building, designed by London-based architects Chapman Taylor and built by Bovis Lend Lease and situated behind the ruined Charles Church, preserved as the city's civilian war memorial, has provoked a mixed reception. Just after it opened, the shopping centre won the inaugural Carbuncle Cup "for crimes against architecture", as the worst new building in the UK. However in 2007 it won two retail industry national awards, one of which was the Retail Week magazine's "Shopping Location of the Year". Also in 2007, the centre's management introduced a code of conduct which, like one the Bluewater centre controversially introduced in 2005, banned hooded tops and baseball caps
