NEPAL Langtang Himalaya -- Apr 2009 -- The aftermath of an extensive forest fire in the Langtang Himalaya of Nepal. Thousands of fires broke out in the dry winter months and burned through to a crescendo in the spring of 2009. Dozens of Nepali security forces died fighting the blazes and many were set intentionally by people being careless with fires, cigarettes and even starting fires deliberately to increase growth a grass which is collected in many of the high forest areas of Nepal -- Picture by Jon Mitchell | Lightroom Photos

NEPAL Near Phunki Tenga -- Porters make their way towards Phunki Tenga carrying commercial loads. Trekking in the Monsoon season is not always a rainy experience, as the sunny weather here shows (this photo taken at the end of July). The advantages of a Monsoon trek in the Everest region are many, while mountain views are not always available, the whole area bursts into life and usually, on rainy days, it only rains for a few hours, meaning that the trekker does not get as wet as they would perhaps expect. Uncrowded trails and lush scenery reveal an often unseen side of the Khumbu Himal -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos

NEPAL Kathmandu -- A general view of the Kathmandu Valley floor taken from the Swayambhunath stupa. An overcrowded, polluted urban environment has sprung up in recent decades, which combined with political chaos has left something of a broken city when this image was taken in late October 2009. The city's residents often suffer high levels of disease, noise pollution, food contamination, rubbish disposal problems and often lack water -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos
NEPAL Solu Khumbu -- Dec 2005 -- Working to lessen the effects of global-warming induced floods which now affect the Sherpas in the village of Phakding. Here some of them examine ways to remove a large boulder from the riverbed of a tributary of the Dudh Khosi River. By removing the boulder they hope to avoid future flood events harming the village, some 10 metres above this riverbed. Upon his return journey, the photographer noted that the locals had managed to successfully remove the boulder

NEPAL Near Shyaphru Bensi -- May 2009 -- Nepali Tamangs walk along a Chinese-built road near Shyaphru Bensi about 80km from Kathmandu, which will connect roads in nearby Tibet to Nepal. China is seeking to build two new roads - this one and another through the Annapurna region - which are supposed to be for trade, though many analysts worry about their military use in the future. Aside from trade, the Chinese have been pressuring Nepal to clamp down on Tibetans living in Nepal who fled the country after a brutal invasion which culminated in 1959. The Chinese military are pressing for more access and control of northern Himalayan provinces (all full of Tibetan Buddhists, some of whom are followers of the exiled Dalai Lama) and it appears that Nepal is in the middle of a larger Great Game between India and China -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos

NEPAL Mount Everest -- Sep 2007 -- The summit of Mount Everest is visible in this telephoto image. This image is from the WSW side of the mountain from several miles away. Despite several attempts, the summit was not reached until May 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. NEPAL Imja Glacier -- 16 Apr 2005 -- Aerial view of the Imja Glacier and the lake that has formed upon it which is a sign of it's decline. Glaciers like this and smaller are disappearing, some have already gone and scientists have noticed a retreating trend on many Himalayan glaciers since 1850. Smaller glaciers litter the Great Himalayan Range and due to temperature rises are expected to melt further - threatening the water supply and agriculture for over half a billion people -- Picture by Jon Mitchell | Lightroom Photos
