Description
In late summer much snow persists on the Icelandic mountains near the northern town of Dalvík. The picture shows the mountain Sigmundur and the valley Hollsdalur. The black basalt of the mountains contrasts with patches of snow while the low, heath vegetation of the valley is in subtle shades of green with patches of snow in areas sheltered from the sun.
Taken from a high viewpoint, the picture shows the peak of Hòlshyrna, its gullies full of snow, rising above the mist which fills Eyafjörður and hides the town of Dalvík. The snowy peaks of a range of mountains on the other side of the fjord also rise above the mist. On the sparse arctic heath in the middle distance, a solitary sheep watches the photographer.
