Description
The replica Spitfire positioned on Whitehall, outside MOD Main Building, opposite Downing Street, from 13 to 17 September 2010, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The aircraft is a replica 41 (Fighter) Squadron Supermarine Spitfire Mk1, circa 1940. She was originally a replica of a Mark IV Supermarine Spitfire, owned by the Imperial War Museum, which has since been converted into a Mark 1 aircraft. An error is apparent in this photo. The small blister on the engine cowling just behind the propeller spinner was not a feature of the Mark 1 Spitfire. It was introduced on the Mark II to allow the fitting of a larger oil pump.
