Steep hill in Lincoln, Lincolnshire has just been voted 'Britains best place' by the Academy of Urbanism, and is, as the name implies, steep. Here, a postman struggles up the hill
Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, Dorset. ancient houses and thatched cottages on a cobbled street. as featured in the 1973 'Boy on Bike' Hovis Bread advertising campaign. Local legend has it that one night, during the late 19th Century, two men were playing cards at an inn on a Saturday night, at midnight, a stranger joined their game and they welcomed him. But one of them dropped a card, and as he bent to pick it up, he noticed that the stranger had a cloven hoof. Terrified, the men fled, never to play cards on the sabbath again.
