Viviani (1863 - 1925) had previously been Prime Minister of France from June 1914 to October 1915. Balfour (1848 - 1930) was Conservative Prime Minister of the UK from 1902 - 1905 and Foreign Secretary from 1916 - 1919. Allenby (1861 - 1936) was a British soldier who led the Egyptian Expeditionary Force to notable victories in the Middle East during WW1, including the capture of Jerusalem in 1917, and was High Commissioner for Egypt from 1919 to 1925. Balfour (1848 - 1930) was Conservative Prime Minister of the UK from 1902 - 1905, Foreign Secretary from 1916 - 1919 and famously authored the Balfour Declaration of 1917 which supported the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Samuel (1870 - 1963) was a British Liberal politician who served as Home Secretary (1916 and 1931 to 1932) and was the first High Commissioner of Palestine (1920 - 1925). Vintage portrait print of American statesman Henry Laurens (1724 - 1792). Laurens, a wealthy merchant and rice planter from South Carolina, was a prominent political figure during the American Revolutionary War and President of the Second Continental Congress from 1777 to 1778. He was captured by the British in 1780 while sailing to Holland on a diplomatic mission and imprisoned for more than a year in the Tower of London before being exchanged for Lord Cornwallis. Laurens later helped negotiate the details of the Treaty of Paris (1783) which ended the Revolutionary War. Engraving circa 1783, based on a drawing by Pierre Eugène Du Simitière.

Undated portrait photo of Neville Chamberlain (1869 - 1940) - Conservative statesman and Prime Minister of the UK from 1937 to 1940. Chamberlain, a former Minister of Health and Chancellor of the Exchequer, became PM in May 1937 and is best remembered for his policy of appeasement towards Hitler. He signed the Munich Agreement in 1938 which ceded the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany - prompting Chamberlain to famously talk of "peace for our time" - but Britain later declared war on Germany in September 1939 after Hitler's invasion of Poland. Chamberlain continued to lead the country for the first eight months of WW2 but resigned in May 1940 after the Allies were forced to retreat from Norway and was replaced as PM by Winston Churchill.

Vintage photo of British Labour politician Arthur Henderson (left) shaking hands with US Secretary of State Frank Billings Kellogg (right) during a trip to the USA in 1925. Henderson (1863 - 1935) was Leader of the Labour Party on three occasions (1908 - 1910, 1914 - 1917 + 1931 - 1932), served as Home Secretary (1924) and Foreign Secretary (1929 - 1931) and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1934 for his work to promote international disarmament. Kellogg (1856 - 1937) was US Secretary of State from 1925 to 1929 and helped negotiate the multinational Pact of Paris in 1928 (also known as the Kellogg-Briand Pact or the General Treaty for the Renunciation of War), a treaty which aimed to prohibit the use of war as an instrument of national policy. He is known as Pitt "The Younger" to distinguish him from his father of the same name. Contemporary World War One illustration of Allied leaders at the formal opening of the Paris Peace Conference on January 18 1919. The Conference set the peace terms for Germany and other defeated nations following the Armistice of 1918. Diplomats came up with a series of treaties including the Treaty of Versailles (dealing with Germany) and the conference came to a close on January 21 1920 with the inaugural General Assembly of the League of Nations. The illustration shows US President Woodrow Wilson (sitting, left), French President Raymond Poincare (standing, centre) and British Prime Minister David Lloyd George (sitting, right) and it appeared in The War Illustrated periodical on February 1 1919. Portrait engraving circa 1826 of John Quincy Adams. Adams (1767 – 1848) was the sixth US President and held office from 1825 to 1829. His father John Adams was the second US President (1797 – 1801). Quincy Adams was also a diplomat involved in many international negotiations and helped formulate the Monroe Doctrine (1823) - the policy of US opposition to European interference in the Americas - while Secretary of State under President James Monroe. Vintage painting circa 1888 of King Henry VIII talking to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. Wolsey (c1475 - 1530) was appointed royal almoner on Henry's accession to the throne in 1509 and soon became the King's most powerful minister. He was made Archbishop of York in 1514, became a Roman Catholic Cardinal shortly afterwards and was appointed Lord Chancellor in 1515 but fell from power after failing to secure an annulment of Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Wolsey was arrested in 1530 and accused of treason but fell ill and died on his way to London. The painting, by Sir John Gilbert (1817 - 1897), is entitled "Ego et Rex Meus" ("I and My King").

He is also remembered as a noted polymath who excelled at many things. He was an author, theorist, diplomat, statesman, printer, inventor and scientist and is particularly remembered for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity and his invention of the lightning rod. In this portrait he is pictured sitting at a desk, looking at an electrical device to his right and holding a quill pen in one hand and his notes in the other hand. Lightning can be seen striking a building through a window in the background. Engraving by Edward Fisher (1730 – circa 1785) based on a work by artist Mason Chamberlin (died 1787).
