Description
In the Middle Ages virtually all churches had paintings on their walls serving two objectives. The first was devotional and the second was to teach. During the Puritan Reformation the churches, and the worship that went on inside them, became plainer. Statues, candles, and all colourful decoration disappeared. In Pickering Church the 15th century wall paintings were hidden by limewash and over the centuries forgotten, until 1852, when work on the interior revealed these treasures and for three weeks many people came to view them. The vicar, Revd. Ponsoby, had them covered over again and it was not until a major refurbishment of the church in 1876-78 that the vicar at that time, Revd. Lightfoot, took the decision to uncover and restore them. The dragon defeated by St George. The paintings on the north wall are mainly of saints including St. George, St. Christopher, John the Baptist, St. Edmund and St. Thomas of Canterbury.

The church warden's accounts of 1713 listed-For Yew tree and fetching it £0-3s-06pence and for setting it 6pence. The yew's reputation for long life is due to the unique way in which the tree grows. Its branches grow down into the ground to form new stems, which then rise up around the old central growth as separate but linked trunks. After a time, they cannot be distinguished from the original tree. So the yew has always been a symbol of death and rebirth, the new that springs out of the old, and a fitting tree for us to study at the beginning of this new year. As the days now grow longer with the beginning of a new solar cycle, we move into the future on the achievements of the past, new creativity springs forth grounded in the accomplishments of " the year gone by.

Peter Bassett St Paul St Paul's Church Malta apostle steps cave Rabat Grotto Rbat
Description
Acccording to the Book of Acts, Paul and his missionary party were shipwrecked on Malta for three months. During his stay, Paul was bitten by a snake and remained unharmed, prompting the natives to regard him as a god. He later healed the father of the governor of the island, Publius, and many other people (Acts 28:1-11). According to tradition, St Paul eschewed the comfortable surroundings offered to him and chose to live in this subterranean grotto instead. Whether or not this is true, it is possible that he preached from here. The Church of St. Paul, built above the grotto, dates from the 17th century. The statue of St Paul was donated by Grand Master Pinto in 1748; the silver galley hanging from the ceiling was given by the Knights of St John in 1960 to mark the 1,900-year anniversary of St Paul's shipwreck. Pope John Paul prayed in the grotto during his visit in May 1990.
