Major-General Winfield Scott (1786-1866) American soldier. During the Mexican-American War 1846-1848 Scott commanded the southern of America's two armies. Scott pictured at the Battle of Veracruz, 20 day siege of the city 9-29 March 1847, pointing to the warships in the harbour. American forces took the city and marched on to Mexico City. Thius was the first large-scale amphibious assault by the United States forces. Lithograph.

Pasteur carried out pioneering research into the causes and prevention of disease and is regarded as one of the founders of the science of microbiology. French postal service. Sorting letters on the Paris-Marseilles express by the light of oil lamps. The expansion of the railway network in the nineteenth century greatly improved mail services.
