To the left is Albert Speer, Hitler's chief architect, and to the right is Arno Breker, Hitler's official state sculptor. All women and children were put inside the church which was then burned to the ground. In all 642 villagers were murdered. This atrocity may have been done in revenge for the assassination of a German officer but not explanation has ever been given. The village has been left exactly as it was as a memorial.
