Description
Dupath Holy Well was probably built by the Monks of St Germans about 1510, and is belived to be the largest and best of its kind in Cornwall. It would have served as a baptistry and oratory and contains the remains of a simple bath for the purposes of immersion. A tradition persists that this Holy Well is located close to a chapel dedicated to St Ethelred, which was licensed in 1405. An ancient and romantic legend states that the site of this well house was chosen as being the place where two Saxon chieftains fought a famous duel to the death.
