The Adler (German for "Eagle") was the first locomotive which was successfully commercially used for rail transport of passengers and goods in Germany. The rail vehicle was constructed and built in 1835 from the british railway pioneers George and Robert Stephenson in the english town Newcastle. It was delivered to the Bavarian Ludwig Railway (Bayerische Ludwigsbahn) for the service between Nuremberg and Fürth. It ran officially for the first time there on 7 December 1835. The Adler was a steam locomotive from the Patentee type with the wheel arrangement 2-2-2 (Whyte notation) or 1A1 (UIC classification). The Adler was furnished with a tender of the type 2 T 2. This photograph shows the 1950 (non operational) replica from the 1950s. Next to the Adler is one of the present day 200mph ICE 3 electric trains currently in use in Germany.

Like many medieval buildings, Castle Veldenstein's exact construction date is not known. Historical documents mention the main house first in 1269. Hermann Goring inherited the castle in 1937. During this time Germany was gearing up for WW II and because Hermann Goring held a very high position within the Nazi party, he constructed a bomb-proof shelter under the castle containing its own electricity, oxygen, and water supply. Rumor has it that Reich Marshal Hermann Goring hid a great deal of Nazi treasure taken during conquests over eastern Europe. When the war was over, the American army arrived at the castle with their pneumatic drills and pickaxes. Although they found five chests none of them contained the treasure rumoured to be in the castle. Many treasure seekers visited the castle, but found nothing. After the war's end, the castle was turned over to the Free State of Bavaria and used as a home for refugees for many years. Today the State of Bavaria owns the castle which houses an hotel and restaurant operated by Mr. Oliver Betzelt and his family. Not normally my "thing", this capture has been treated with HDR software to give it that dramatic touch! (Info. courtesy of Hotel Burg Veldenstein)

The Kellerberg in Höchstadt consists of 22 buildings and a labyrinth of cellars with a total length of 2 Kilometres. They were used to store locally brewed beers, but since refrigeration was invented, they gradually became redundant. However, there is now growing interest, many are used as club houses and some have been recently renovated. The Bergkirchweih is an annual fair taking place in Erlangen, Germany. Locals nickname it Berrch, which is the Franconian pronunciation of the German word Berg, meaning mountain. The Bergkirchweih starts every Thursday before Pentecost at 5PM. The opening ceremony called "Anstich," which is carried out by the City's Mayor, takes place in a different beer cellar every year, with thousands gathering to watch the opening spectacle with a huge fight for beer. Twelve days later the last beer barrel is buried in the cellar where the next Anstich will take place. The Bergkirchweih area is located in the northern extremities of downtown Erlangen and roughly a kilometer long (0.6mi). With its beer cellars, booths and rides and its huge ferris wheel, which is the berch's traditional landmark, it is a festival for the whole family, no matter how young or old. With its ale-benches under linden, chestnuts and oaks it is the biggest Open-Air-Biergarten of Europe with more than 11,000 seats. The Bergkirchweih has taken place since 1755. Nowadays the time when the fair takes place is called the "fifth season". Due to the fact that Erlangen has one of the best universities in Germany and houses Siemens, many families and people move in and out. The Bergkirchweih is often the only chance for old friends, fellows or colleagues to meet again, resulting in the visit of roughly a million people - roughly ten times the town's population - for the event. The Bergkirchweih is the third biggest fair in Bavaria.
