The traditional Thames Barge, 'Edme' taking part in the annual barge race in September 2011. The barges leave Bateman's Tower, Brightlingsea and race along the coast and back. The 'Edme' is chartered by Edme Consortium. Edme Ltd are based at their maltings in Mistley, Essex. Some twenty or so of the remaining Thames Barges, now operate from and along east coast estuaries (Orwell, Stour, Colne, Blackwater, Thames, etc) on hire for pleasure cruising and sightseeing. The 'Edme' is seen passing the beach at East Mersea as it leaves Brightlingsea along the River Colne estuary. Thames barges are a regular sight in ones and twos along the east coast, but only at barge matches can they be seen in great numbers.

The Strood is a causway linking Mersea Island to the Essex mainland. It regularly floods with the highest of tides and island residents are all aware of tide times an when to expect traffic delays. This phot was taken in the 1960s, but the Strood is still the only link between the island and the mainland.
One lone sheep can be seen in this windy weather picture of the meadows alongside the Nature Reserve on the bank of the River Colne estuary. At most times both cattle and sheep graze these meadows.

Batemans Tower, one of the first concrete buildings in Britain, is a landmark for many miles around. It is seen here in the centre of the picture. On the right is a group of walkers along the old railway line alongside the nature reserve. The picture was taken from Fingringhoe nature reserve on the other side of the River Colne estuary.

Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm, now fully operational and supplying 125,000 homes with electricity, was serviced from Brightlingsea, on the River Colne Estuary, in Essex between Colchester and Clacton. Bases and equipment were held in the river mouth and taken to the Gunfleet location by barge, here seen loading by crane. In the foreground is Batemans Tower, one of Britain's first all concrete buildings, built in 1883 by John Bateman as a recuperation area for his daughter who was suffering from consumption. The building was restored to its original appearance in 2009, work being completed shortly before this picture was taken.

Bateman's Tower was one of the first all concrete constructions in Britain when it was built in 1883 by John Bateman as a recuperation area for his daughter who was suffering from consumption, the building was restored to its original appearance in 2009.
