Description
The first Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 (Blériot Experimental Number Two), a reconnaissance design for the Royal Flying Corps. "Blériot" refers to the fact that, like the cross channel machine, it had a tractor and not a pusher engine. Its clean condition suggests it was probably taken at or about the time of its first flight on 1st February 1912 at the factory premises at South Farnborough. This was before the allocation of military aircraft serial numbers in the middle of this year. The pilot in the picture is almost certainly the aircraft's designer and test-pilot Geoffrey de Havilland. Picture by Lightroom Photos
