Description
The centerpiece of Roanoke Island's festival Park park is the 69-foot Elizabeth II, a representative 16th-century sailing ship. The square-rigged three-mast bark was built in the early 1980s as part of the America's 400th Anniversary Celebration that marked the quadricentennial of the Roanoke Voyages 1584-1587. It is modeled after the ship Elizabeth, which sailed from England in 1585. Costumed interpreters speaking Old English greet visitors to the ship and answer questions about 16th century seafaring. The park and cultural center celebrate the first English settlement in America, at Roanoke. It is located across the bridge from the waterfront in Manteo, NC, on its own 25-acre island.
