Description
So legendary are the load-carrying abilities of the Nepalese that the word Sherpa, a term for one of the country's ethnic groups, has become synonymous with "porter." A typical Nepalese porter can carry a load nearly as heavy as he or she is. They are highly regarded as expert mountaineers as well as having good physical endurance and resilience to high altitude conditions.

NEPAL Thamo -- 15 Jul 2007 -- A Sherpa boy skips down the street in Thamo in the Nangpa Valley of the Khumbu Himal (Everest region). Trekking this area during the annual Monsoon is not all rainy days and offers a different side to the region than is seen in the usual seasons. Lower numbers of trekkers allow for more insight into the daily life of the Sherpas and lush green landscapes abound - and it does not rain for more than a few hours each day and sometimes not at all -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos

NEPAL Near Shyaphru Bensi -- May 2009 -- Nepali Tamangs walk along a Chinese-built road near Shyaphru Bensi about 80km from Kathmandu, which will connect roads in nearby Tibet to Nepal. China is seeking to build two new roads - this one and another through the Annapurna region - which are supposed to be for trade, though many analysts worry about their military use in the future. Aside from trade, the Chinese have been pressuring Nepal to clamp down on Tibetans living in Nepal who fled the country after a brutal invasion which culminated in 1959. The Chinese military are pressing for more access and control of northern Himalayan provinces (all full of Tibetan Buddhists, some of whom are followers of the exiled Dalai Lama) and it appears that Nepal is in the middle of a larger Great Game between India and China -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos
NEPAL Khumbu Valley -- 03 Aug 2007 -- This panoramic image shows the Lobuche Khola (river) in full Monsoon flow. Inreased runoff water - due to climate change - from large glaciers like the Khumbu Glacier above this river is contributing to severe Monsoon floods in the Terai of Nepal, northeastern India and Bangladesh. This year's floods were very severe, displacing some 30-40 million people and causing thousands of deaths due to polluted water supplies. Similar flooding occurred in 2004 and is expected to continue in the coming years, until there is no more glacial water, then scientists say, south Asia is likely to suffer widespread drought -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos
