Crowds at Portobello Beach on the Firth of Forth estuary, Edinburgh, Scotland, c. 1930. The Edinburgh suburb with its sandy beach and promenade had its heyday as a resort in the late 19th century - mainly for day trippers from the Scottish capital. Attractions included a large open air swimming pool and amusement arcades. A sign bottom left indicates that deck chairs cost 3 pence to hire. There was a gradual decline in Portobello's popularity during the twentieth century and the swimming pool closed in 1984 - a vintage nineteen twenties/thirties photograph
