Description
The buds of a species of Dactylorhiza, the Common Spotted Orchid. There are seven varieties of ‘spotted’ orchids in Ireland, therefore it is difficult to say which species this is, well for me anyway. Taken on Arranmore Island, County Donegal.

Heath-Spotted orchid. This photo depicts a wild British orchid. This image was taken on a sunny May day. The flower belongs to a group of Marsh orchids
Lip 6-8mm divided into 3 more or less equal pinkish lobes. Inflorescence globular, pyramidical or egg shaped. Found in dunes and grassland throughout the UK, mainly on basic soils. This hardy perennial plant grows to a height of 30 cm. The colour of the flower varies from pink to purple, or rarely white, and the scent is described as "foxy". The arrangement of hermaphroditic flowers in a compact pyramidal shape is very distinctive and gives the orchid its common name. The flowers are pollinated by butterflies and moths.
