Smeaton's Tower is situated on Plymouth Hoe, overlooking Plymouth Sound. It was originally a lighthouse erected on the Eddystone reef in 1759, but had to be removed due to erosion of the rock by the sea. It was moved to Plymouth after a public subscription and opened in 1884 as a memorial to John Smeaton who had built the lighthouse.
