A walker and his dog enjoy the view in the cove at the southern end of Chesil Beach beneath the cliffs of the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. Chesil Beach, a major tombolo shingle structure, and the Isle of Portland, a limestone island, are famous features at the centre of the Jurassic Coast - the UNESCO World Heritage Site on the English Channel coast of Southern England. The site stretches 95 miles from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in Devon to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in Dorset and was the second wholly-natural World Heritage site to be designated in the UK. The Jurassic Coast consists of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous cliffs, spanning the Mesozoic Era, documenting 180 million years of geological history.
