Birr Castle, Offaly, built by the Parson family,Earls of Rosse in c1620 on the site of an ancient Norman Castle of 1170.The 3rd Earl of Rosse built the historic Telescope in the grounds, and it remained the largest Telescope for 70 years. The Third Earl also discovered the Whirlpool Nebula in 1820.
Birr Castle home to the Parson family, the Earl and Countess of Rosse since 1620 and built on the site of a Norman Castle dating from 1170. A great tourist attraction in Ireland.
