Wildlife Animals This Powelliphanta or Giant Carniverous Snail shell was found on the Heaphy Track on the South Island of New Zealand around August 2004. The geology is karst or limestone. The snail shells are mostly found as the track leaves the coast to travel through rainforests. The large numbers of possums in the area are thought to endanger the snails by eating them.
