IRAQ Hit -- 13 Jun 2006 -- Iraqi soldiers converse minutes before loading up in U.S. Army Bradley fighting vehicles for a patrol through Hit, Iraq ? a city 70 miles northwest of Ramadi in Iraq?s Al Anbar Province, June 13, 2006. Iraqi and U.S. soldiers patrol Hit?s streets daily together, and have spent several weeks conducting a census of the city to get a better grasp on information about the city?s population. U.S. soldiers from the Germany-based 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, the U.S. military unit assigned to this region of Iraq, say their Iraqi counterparts are well on their way to independent operations. Just two weeks ago, an Iraqi-led patrol caught two men with 122 mm artillery rounds in a burlap sack ? material which could have resulted in an improvised explosive device, the number one threat to both U. S. and Iraqi soldiers in this mostly Sunni city 70 miles northwest of Ramadi. The Iraqi soldiers, noticed the men during a routine foot patrol near the city?s cemetery. The Iraqi soldiers suspected the men were up to no good, and called them on it. ?We must have walked past, I don?t know, thousands of people on that patrol, ? said Army 1st Sgt. David B. Sapp, company first sergeant for 1-36?s Apache Company, which controls operations in Hit?s central sector. ?They saw someone in that cemetery, questioned why he was there, and found out he had a bomb.? It?s scenarios like these that bolster American confidence in the Iraqi soldiers? abilities. Iraqi patrols are resulting

IRAQ Al Furat -- 08 May 2006 -- Newly accepted for enlistment in Iraq?s Army, 78 new recruits, mostly Sunnis, wait for details about basic training and other issues concerning life in the Army from Iraqi Ministry of Defense officials during a recruiting drive at Al Furat, Iraq, May 8, 2006. About 189 Iraqi men, most 30?ish in age, lined up to sign their name on the dotted line and enlist for service during the screening drive in this stretch of small villages located just 14 miles northwest of Ramadi. In this small, mostly-Sunni region nestled along the Euphrates River in Al Anbar Province, Iraqi men say they are fed up with the insurgency in Iraq, and are doing something about it ? joining the Iraqi Army. During the one-day screening in this region of about 30,000, 78 of the 189 men who showed up were accepted for enlistment. So far, about 340 Iraqi men have been recruited from Al Anbar Province in recent weeks. US Army photo (Released) -- Picture by Jim Goodwin / Lightroom Photos / US Army
IRAQ Haditha -- 25 Jun 2006 -- Three US Marines assigned to the Hawaii-based India Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, navigate an incline while on a two-hour patrol through the winding terrain of Haditha, Iraq, June 25, 2006. During these patrols, the Marines train Iraqi soldiers on military tactics they?ll need to eventually take over security operations in the region. By summer?s end, 75 percent of all Iraqi Army Brigades will be leading security operations throughout Iraq, said Gen. George Casey, commander, Multinational Force Iraq, during a Pentagon press briefing June 22, 2006, in Washington, D.C. By year?s end, ?eight or nine? of the 10 Iraqi Army Divisions will be leading combat operations instead of Coalition Forces, said Casey to reporters. Iraqi soldiers in Haditha have shown considerable improvement in the past three months in their military proficiency, said Capt. Andy Lynch, India Company?s commanding officer. The soldiers have become better at spotting improvised explosive devices, and collecting intelligence used to capture insurgents. Three months ago, the soldiers would not go on patrols unless the Marines were with them and were only able to provide minimal assistance in gathering intelligence and spotting potential dangers. CUBA Guantanamo Bay -- c.2002 -- Detainee hospital ward, Camp Delta, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Guantanamo Bay facility has been widely criticised by lawyers and human rights groups, as many detainees were simply bought from dubious Afghan warlords and it is thought many of the inmates have little to do with Al Queda. Despite this, many were tortured by US forces upon their detention, seemingly on orders from George W Bush himself (or at least his office). Very few "terrorists" have since been convicted with any solid evidence and almost 200 people have died in US detention facilities like this - most of them innocent men. IRAQ Baghdad -- Nov 2003 -- US Army Private First Class Jessica Lynn Nicholson, 21, a 1st Armored Division soldier with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 40th Engineer Battalion, Division Engineers, was recently awarded the Army Commendation Medal "for valor and courage in the face of enemy action" in Baghdad, Iraq. Her decisive actions at a security checkpoint prevented the enemy from endangering the lives of her fellow soldiers. She wrestled an Iraqi man to the ground, and held him there until other soldiers could come and zip-cuff the man, after a grenade was found hidden behind the visor in his car. Her weapon is an M-249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon). She often has to ride on the back of a Humvee to provide security with her machine gun, which she has nicknamed Camille, whenever her unit goes on a convoy.
