RHODESIA -- c.1968 -- Rhodesian Army soldiers practice an unusual infantry technique with .303 Lee Enfield rifles in the bush somewhere in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The Rhodesian Bush War or Zimbabwean War of Independence lasted almost 15 years and was one of the conflicts in which the Cold War was played out between the West and the Communist Bloc in Africa. The conflict began in 1964 and ended in 1980 with Independence. Aside from thousands of military casualties, the war took a heavy toll on the country's civilians too, who were often targeted by ruthless rebels, backed by the Soviet Union. The War Memorial at Bembridge in the Isle of Wight, England. Standing on a corner at the junction of High Street and Church Road, the memorial commemorates the servicemen who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, and also one man who died in the Korean War and one man who died in the Falklands conflict. The stone cross, has an octagonal pedestal, standing on a tiered base. On the same site is a Royal Marine Commando Memorial.
