NEPAL Kathmandu -- A busy main thoroughfare in central Kathmandu, Nepal. Although not as bad as Dakar, Kathmandu has many narrow streets which are often crowded with traffic. Exhaust fumes, generators and local brick kilns cause high and dangerous air pollution levels, particularly outside the annual monsoon season. Noise levels are also damaging to health, with incessant use of horns (which is normal road ettiquette in South Asia) in narrow streets makes the capital a deafening place to be. There is little city planning in the Kathmandu Valley and many of it's problems stem from the increasingly large population. Like Indian cities a large variety of vehicle and their various adaptations ply the roads of the Himalayan capital each day, making for a fascinating, if very noisy, sight -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos
