SPAIN Rias Baixas -- 02/12/2002 -- Fisherman on his boat in the Ria de Arousa. Galicia has a larger fleet of fishing boats than the rest of Europe put together. Now most of it is docked in hundreds of ports like this along the NW Spanish coast. Thousands of tonnes of heavy fuel oil has contaminated large swathes of the north-western coast of Spain after the tanker Prestige sank in late November 2002. The ship was carrying around 77,000 tonnes of fuel oil and while some has been extracted from the wreck, a lot of the oil has leaked into the sea causing a ecological disaster along much of the southern Atlantic coast of Europe. The cost of the disaster is estimated at over 20 billion Euros. Thousands of volunteers and military personnel are involved in the clean-up operation which could last for six months -- Picture

USA Gulf Islands National Seashore -- 26 Jun 2010 -- As of June 27, 2010, the entire gulf-facing beachfront of several barrier islands in eastern Mississippi (offshore of Pascagoula) had received a designation of at least ?lightly oiled? by the interagency Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Team that is responding to the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. A few small stretches of Petit Bois Island had been labeled "heavily" or "moderately oiled". This high-resolution image shows Petit Bois Island (top right) and the eastern end of Horn Island (top left) on June 26. In general, oil-covered waters are silvery and cleaner waters are blue-gray. This pattern is especially consistent farther from the islands. The intensely bright patches of water directly offshore of the barrier islands, however, may be from a combination of factors, including sediment and organic material, coastal currents and surf, and oil. Pollution along the US Gulf Coast varies as oil continues to leak - at the rate of almost one tanker disaster per week - out the Deepwater Horizon rig which exploded in April 2010. While engineers from BP and Haliburton made some efforts to contain the oil, which is still leaking, it is an ecological disaster for the waters in the Gulf of Mexico and is likely to cause widespread contamination of fisheries. At the moment - 15 July 2010 - engineers are attempting to replace a cap on the well, though oil officials also said that the oil will not stop leaking until at least August 2010, further contam

EARTH Gulf of Mexico -- 22 Jun 2010 -- A NASA satellite image shows the massive extent of the leaking crude oil from the damaged BP/Haliburton rig (Deepwater Horizon - which is more or less in the centre of the oil slick) in the Gulf of Mexico - seen as a brown/grey area on this image almost the size of the US state of Florida. While efforts continue - without success - to prevent the oil from contuing to leak out, the fissures in the rock continue to leak as much crude as one Exxon Valdez leak per week - threatening to pollute areas far beyond the Gulf of Mexico. Mid Atlantic currents indicate that the North Atlantic Ocean could be severely polluted if the leaks are not prevented soon -- Picture by Lightroom Photos | NASA

AUSTRALIA Rockhampton -- 09 Jan 2011 -- The airport, Bruce Highway, and large swaths of Rockhampton (visible in the centre of this image) remained underwater on January 9, 2011. Days of rain pushed the Fitzroy River over its banks, inundating parts of the city near the Queensland coast. Damage to Bruce Highway was not confined to Rockhampton; on January 11, 2011, ABC News Australia reported that other parts of the highway, in southeastern Queensland, were expected to remain underwater for some time. In this image, acquired by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA?s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite on January 9, 2011, isolated islands of cityscape poke through murky brown flood waters. The Fitzroy River cuts through the upper right quadrant of the image, and just west of the river, relatively high land remains above the flood. All around that area, flood water predominates, including areas east of the river. Rockhampton was just one of many Australian communities reeling from floods, according to news reports. Farmers along the Sunshine Coast were stranded by high waters that washed out roads.
