Description
Vintage engraving print depicting the trial of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, in Westminster Hall in 1641. Wentworth (1593 - 1641) was an English statesman and a major figure in the period leading up to the English Civil War. He served in Parliament, became a supporter of King Charles I and from 1632 - 1639 imposed a harsh rule as Lord Deputy of Ireland. He was recalled to England in late 1639 and became a leading advisor to the King, attempting to strengthen the royal position against Parliament. He was impeached by Parliament for "high misdemeanours" and his trial opened on March 22 1641 but defended himself so ably that his opponents had a bill of attainder passed in April / May condemning him to death - essentially a mechanism which allows Parliament to decree that an accused person is guilty of treason without actually proving it in law. The king reluctantly signed his death warrant and Wentworth was beheaded on Tower Hill on May 12 1641. Engraving circa 1842 by James Scott, based on a painting by William Fisk.

UK England -- 16th Century -- Portrait of Sir Fulke Brooke ( 1554-1628 ) - the First Lord Brooke on an engraving by W Hilton. This famous Elizabethan courtier was successively, Treasurer of the Royal Navy, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Commissioner of the Treasury, under Elizabeth I and James I. Tragically, he was fatally stabbed by his servant, Ralph Heywood - who subsequently killed himself. Apparently, motivated by being cheated out of the Baron's estate. Aside from his contributions to the government of the day and his great literary achievements, it is thought by some that Greville was the true author of several plays attributed to William Shakespeare -- Picture by W Hilton | Lightroom Photos

Description
Undated portrait photo of Neville Chamberlain (1869 - 1940) - Conservative statesman and Prime Minister of the UK from 1937 to 1940. Chamberlain, a former Minister of Health and Chancellor of the Exchequer, became PM in May 1937 and is best remembered for his policy of appeasement towards Hitler. He signed the Munich Agreement in 1938 which ceded the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany - prompting Chamberlain to famously talk of "peace for our time" - but Britain later declared war on Germany in September 1939 after Hitler's invasion of Poland. Chamberlain continued to lead the country for the first eight months of WW2 but resigned in May 1940 after the Allies were forced to retreat from Norway and was replaced as PM by Winston Churchill.
