King Alfred's tower is a 160 ft high triangular brick folly designed in 1765 by Henry Flitcroft and completed in 1772 by Henry Hoare II. It stands on Kingsettle Hill, in the parish of Brewham, on the Somerset / Wiltshire border, as part of the Stourhead estate. It was built on the site where it is believed Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, rallied his troops before going into battle against the Danes in 878 AD.

SOMERSET : figure of KING ALFRED on the east wall of 150 foot high KING ALFRED'S TOWER above Stourton on the Somerset / Wiltshire border. The tower was built in 1766-72 by Henry Hoare of nearby Stourhead and marks Alfred's presumed victory site of the Danes.

Stoodley Pike is a 1,300-foot (400 m) hill in the south Pennines, noted for the 121 foot Stoodley Pike Monument at its summit, which dominates the moors above Todmorden in West Yorkshire. The monument was designed in 1854 by local architect James Green, and completed in 1856 at the end of the Crimean War. The monument replaced an earlier structure, started in 1814 and commemorating the defeat of Napoleon and the surrender of Paris.
