Description
Montreuil-sur-Mer is a fortified town situated around 10 kilometers inland from Le Touquet along the River Canche, 40 minutes drive south of Calais. The town was a thriving port during the 12th and 13th Centuries, but silting up of the river estuary reduced the vialbility of the harbour. The town is situated in a commanding position on a hill, overlooking the harbour, and surrounded by ancient ramparts, Parts of the Citadel date back to the 13th Century, and the large Abbey Church of Saint Saulve dates back to the 12th Century. The Hotel-Dieu Chapel was started in 1200 as a refuge for the needy and restored in the 19th Century. The town is full of 18th and 19th Century streets, houses, and churches, parts of which were the setting for Victor Hugo's book"Les Miserables" and used in the 1925 silent film of the same.
