Description
The Portuguese Cannon. This gun was cast in the early part of the 15th Century with the Royal Coat of Arms of Spain on its barrel. It was transported to the Portuguese Colonies in South East Asia before 1785, and then ended up in the possession of the King of Arakan: a state on the west coast of Burma, where it was captured by the British in 1885. In 1886, the cannon was presented to Edinburgh, and placed on Calton Hill the following year. This cannon was one of six that used to stand on Calton Hill. The other five were melted down in 1940 as part of the war effort.
