The royal children also played at Osborne: a full-sized Swiss chalet was imported for them to play house in; it is charmingly furnished with child-sized maple furniture, and a scaled-down kitchen in which they prepared meals for their parents. Next to it is the cottage garden, now decoratively replanted, where the children grew vegetables, which they sold to Prince Albert at commercial rates, and their initialled wheelbarrows can be seen in the adjacent thatched summerhouse. All kinds of antiquities and curiosities were amassed by and for the children: stuffed animals and birds, geological specimens and shells, Egyptian and oriental objets d'art, Micmac Indian and other tribal artefacts. The collection soon overflowed the Swiss Cottage, and a Museum, also in chalet style, was built next door to house it.
