NEPAL Near Tengboche -- Aug 2007 -- Porters on the trail near Tengboche. Trekking the Everest region in the Monsoon months is becoming increasingly popular for some. NEPAL Near Phunki Tenga -- Porters make their way towards Phunki Tenga carrying commercial loads. Trekking in the Monsoon season is not always a rainy experience, as the sunny weather here shows (this photo taken at the end of July). The advantages of a Monsoon trek in the Everest region are many, while mountain views are not always available, the whole area bursts into life and usually, on rainy days, it only rains for a few hours, meaning that the trekker does not get as wet as they would perhaps expect. Uncrowded trails and lush scenery reveal an often unseen side of the Khumbu Himal -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos
NEPAL Periche La -- Jul 2007 -- A commercial porter approaches the Pheriche La (Pass) on the Everest trail. Description
So legendary are the load-carrying abilities of the Nepalese that the word Sherpa, a term for one of the country's ethnic groups, has become synonymous with "porter." A typical Nepalese porter can carry a load nearly as heavy as he or she is. They are highly regarded as expert mountaineers as well as having good physical endurance and resilience to high altitude conditions.
An old Nepalese woman, with a deeply lined face and lots of character, wearing a traditional Nepalese skirt, sitting in the sun praying while running the prayer beads through her hands. She is wearing a modern fleece hat and modern running shoes and coat. She is praying on the steps of a mountaineering shop in Lukla main street and a bundle of red climbing rope can be seen behind her.

NEPAL Kathmandu -- A busy main thoroughfare in central Kathmandu, Nepal. Although not as bad as Dakar, Kathmandu has many narrow streets which are often crowded with traffic. Exhaust fumes, generators and local brick kilns cause high and dangerous air pollution levels, particularly outside the annual monsoon season. Noise levels are also damaging to health, with incessant use of horns (which is normal road ettiquette in South Asia) in narrow streets makes the capital a deafening place to be. There is little city planning in the Kathmandu Valley and many of it's problems stem from the increasingly large population. Like Indian cities a large variety of vehicle and their various adaptations ply the roads of the Himalayan capital each day, making for a fascinating, if very noisy, sight -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos
