Montreuil-sur-Mer is a fortified town situated around 10 kilometers inland from Le Touquet along the River Canche, 40 minutes drive south of Calais. The town was a thriving port during the 12th and 13th Centuries, but silting up of the river estuary reduced the vialbility of the harbour. The town is situated in a commanding position on a hill, overlooking the harbour, and surrounded by ancient ramparts, Parts of the Citadel date back to the 13th Century,and the large Abbey Church of Saint Saulve dates back to the 12th Century. The Hotel-Dieu Chapel was started in 1200 as a refuge for the needy and restored in the 19th Century. The town is full of 18th and 19th Century streets, houses, and churches, parts of which were the setting for Victor Hugo's book"Les Miserables" and used in the 1925 silent film of the same.

At sunset, shadows of the city hall create a jagged shadow across the guild halls of the archers (maison de la Louvre), carpenters and coopers (maison du Sac), tallow makers (maison de la Brouette), and bakers (Roi d'Espagne) on the Grand Place in Brussels, Capitale, Belgium, Europe. The two center buildings were the only survivors of the French bombardment of 1695.

The town is less than one hour from Dieppe, an hour from Boulogne and 75 minutes from Calais. The commune is on the Picardie coast adjacent to the Baie de la Somme and at the mouth of the Somme river. It is 30 km north west of Abbeville and to the west of the battlefields of the Somme. The majority of the commune lies adjacent to the sea and the Somme river on the Quai du Romerel, Quai Courbet, Quai Jeanne d'Arc, Quai Blavet and the Quai Perree. The majority of the commune lies adjacent to the sea and the Somme river on the Quai du Romerel, Quai Courbet, Quai Jeanne d'Arc, Quai Blavet and the Quai Perree. The oldest part of the commune lies on the northern coast to the north west of the main settlement. To the south is the main road, the CD940 between Abbeville and Cayeux-sur-Mer
