Ireland, County Mayo, West of Ireland, Clew Bay, Seascape, Lobster Boat
Description
I spotted this boat a couple of days previously and knew it would make a great focal point for a shot. I needed to walk a good distance along the coast to reach the boat, which was so nice as it was a beautiful calm evening. The boat is anchored in a sheltered part of the bay, protected by some of the islands dotted around its inner waters. With the sun setting to the west the most natural composition was to include the islands in the background. This worked very well as the small cliffs on the seaward side of each island glowed in the low evening sun. I had intended to include Croagh Patrick in the shot, which is just over the right hand side of the boat, but it clouded over as I was waiting for the right light to capture the scene.
Ireland, County Mayo, West of Ireland, Croagh Patrick, Holy Mountain, Pilgrimage, Saint Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland, Clew Bay, Seascape, Sheebeen Pub, Thatch Cottage
Description
This pretty pub is situated just outside Westport town, along the old coast road to Louisburgh. It overlooks the inner most waters of Clew Bay with its many small islands and inlets visible from here. The building has a very traditional feel with its whitewashed walls and thatched roof, making it very popular with holiday makers. Croagh Patrick can be seen in the background which commands the southern shoreline of the Bay. A shebeen (Irish: sibĂn) was originally an illicit bar or club where excisable alcoholic beverages were sold without a licence.

Description
There are many great views along the road that follows the northern coast of Clew Bay but this is definitely one of the best. From here you are looking south over the bay towards Croagh Patrick. In the scene you can see how the small islands and inlets dotted around the bay form fantastic patterns. The shot was taken shortly after sunrise, when the low morning sun really brings out the detail in the landscape. The small boat in the scene is always moored in the same place, making a perfect focal point for some foreground interest.

Ireland, County Mayo, Newport, Burrishoole, West of Ireland, Stone Bridge, River Scene, Swans
Description
This beautiful bridge was originally part of the main road between Newport and Mulranny. Luckily, as volumes of traffic increased, rather than demolishing this bridge a more modern one was built down river. It is typical of the multi-arched stone bridges built in Ireland for hundreds of years. After parking up I noticed two swans swimming up river so I raced to get into position for a shot. In my rush to make sure I got the swans before they went under the bridge I ended up getting soaked to the knees in the boggy ground close to the riverbank, but it was definitely worth it as it always great to include them in a scene. The low morning sun really brings out the warm colours in the bridge, cottage and reeds along the riverbank which are reflected perfectly in the calm river.
Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland, Landscape, Seascape, West Coast, Rural Ireland
Description
This location is along the Atlantic Drive, near the southern tip of the Island. From here there is a great view looking northwest along the cliffs towards Dooagh Village. There was a very large swell producing 25ft waves, which looked fantastic as they rolled into the small Bay. I managed to get out in between the showers for some quick handheld shots and was very pleased with the pattern the waves formed, while the houses situated up on the hill above the bay giving the shot a good sense of scale.
Bunratty Castle viewed from the Folk Village at the rear.Bunratty- Bun Raite means in Irish the bottom or end of the Ratty River which runs beside the castle.
Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland, Seascape, Pier, Large Wave, Rural Ireland, West Coast.
Description
Dooagh is the most westerly village on Achill Island and out here you get a real sense that you are on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean as the road only continues for another few miles over the cliffs and down into Keem Bay. On the day of this shot I knew that the large swell would be breaking over the pier wall as the tide came in. The weather was a mixture of very heavy showers and clear spells so I set up my camera in between the showers and spent a roll of film recording the action.
