Overlooking HM Dockyard with the Spanish town of Algecerias across the Bay of Gibraltar. At this time there were no telecommunication links with Spain and military aircraft were not allowed to fly into Spanish airspace. Instead they took the more tortuous route flying as close as possible to the "border" between Moroccan and Spanish airspace to get through the narrow passage from the Atlantic to the Straits of Gibraltar. When the wind was blowing from the East, landing at Gibraltar airport could be quite hair raising. To the present date, no aircraft from the United Kingdom is allowed to fly over Algecerias.
