Normally, this local amatuer football match at Little Oakley, Essex would have been watched by a handful of spectators. This was in the hard winter of 1963 when no football was played in north-east Essex for several weeks - including Colchester United at their Layer Road ground. Result was that many people who would have normally been supporting their own team travelled to the only matches played - weekly at Lt Oakley. Despite the hard conditions, teams, officials and spectators turned up after road journeys.
