    Description
A line-up of AEC Routemasters seen at a Bus Rally in 2009. Nearest the camera is RM5 (nominal date: 1959) wearing the standard London Transport Central bus livery of the '60s. The AEC Routemaster double-decker bus of London Transport was a highly regarded and iconic part of the London street scene for more than forty years, and is now an equally loved and familiar presence at Heritage Vehicle rallies and shows. Of advanced integral construction, the 'RM' had separate front and rear mechanical units which were mounted under a rigidly built 'monocoque' body. During overhaul these units would be switched several times between different vehicles and so it is difficult to randomly date a Routemaster exactly, (with a handful of exceptions) beyond the period in which that particular model was being built, ie:in this case (RM5) 1959-65 for the standard 27.5ft model. Most RMs were powered by the AEC AV590 9.6 litre diesel, with around a fifth powered by the Leyland 0.600 9.8 litre, and a smaller number powered by the AEC AV690 11.3 litre engine.
